Virtual machine (VM) deployments

What is VM deployment?

Applications for your virtual machines may be managed, shared, and distributed globally more easily with the help of the resource-type VM Applications in Azure Compute Gallery (formerly known as Shared Image Gallery). When you create an Azure VM deployment, you select the engine type, version, and configuration to deploy to the Azure virtual network (VNet) specified in the environment.

How does it work?

Before you start an Azure VM deployment, you should complete the following prerequisites:

Ensure that you have finished the following steps before creating an Azure VM deployment:

  1. Create an Azure (Microsoft Azure) environment: Create an Azure environment in the Control Hub.
  2. Set up a managed identity: Request that your Azure administrator set up a managed identity in Azure to connect to the supplied VM instances.
  3. Establish a resource group: Request that the provisioned VM instances be allocated to a resource group by your Azure administrator. If the parent Azure environment has a default resource group set up, you can skip this and use the default.
  4. Generate a pair of SSH keys: Do this by either creating a local key pair or asking your Azure administrator to create a new key pair.
  5. If necessary, create an archive of external resources.

How can you deploy a virtual machine?

To deploy a virtual machine in a private cloud, follow these simple steps:

  1. Choose the private cloud where you want to put the virtual machine by clicking “Select Cloud”. You can choose the host on which the virtual machine should be deployed in the private cloud if you are logged in as an administrator.
  2. Check the VM settings under "Configure Settings". Accept the host's default VM path or enter a different address. The option to add this path to the host's list of standard virtual machine paths is available. Accept the default values for the VHD in "Machine Resources" or change them as necessary. Choose the pin icon next to the setting to stop placement from selecting its own values.
  3. Click "Select Networks" and choose the network settings, and then click "Next".
  4. Under “Add Properties”, configure the host’s start-up and shutdown processes as well as the VM’s operating system. Then click “Next”.
  5. Verify the settings under “Summary”, then click “Create”. Confirm that the VM was generated by choosing the cloud under “VMs and Services > Clouds”. In the VMs window, the virtual machine can be seen.
