1. Intro

The Mobius MGCP is a high-performance media-control component designed to integrate Mobius-based telecommunications systems with MGCP-compliant Call Agents, Softswitches, or VoIP controllers. It implements the Media Gateway Control Protocol as defined in [RFC 3435], providing a reliable and standards-aligned mechanism for external controllers to manage endpoints, RTP sessions, signaling events, tones, and bearer resources on the Mobius media layer.

In modern telecom networks, the MGCP functions as the execution layer for call control intelligence residing in external systems. While the Call Agent determines service logic, routing, dial plans, and policy, the Mobius MGCP is responsible for translating those high-level decisions into concrete actions on media resources: creating or modifying RTP streams, generating tones, detecting user events, and controlling circuit or packet-based endpoints. This separation ensures clear functional division between call control (MGC) and media handling (MGW), following the decomposed gateway architecture recommended in [RFC 3435].

Although contemporary mobile core networks (IMS/VoLTE/5G) standardize on H.248 / Megaco for media gateway control, MGCP remains widely used in wireline VoIP, cable telephony, SIP-to-PSTN interworking, legacy access gateways, and hybrid environments where interoperability with existing MGCP deployments is required. The Mobius MGCP is designed precisely for such use cases: it allows Mobius-based platforms to operate in mixed ecosystems where MGCP controllers continue to manage access or trunking media gateways.
